How to Use Color and Sound
Everything you need to know about using the music visualizer—from first launch to power-user tricks.
Quick Start
Go to colorandsound.app in any browser.
When prompted, tap or click Allow to let Color and Sound listen to your audio.
Play audio from any source—Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube, a local file—and watch the visuals react in real time.
That's it. No account, no download, no setup. The audio visualizer works instantly in your browser.
How to Connect Audio
Color and Sound uses your device's microphone or system audio to capture sound. Here's how to get it working on each browser.
Chrome / Edge (Desktop)
Click the microphone icon in the address bar or click Allow when the permission prompt appears. Once granted, play audio from any tab—Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, local files—and Color and Sound will visualize it.
Safari (macOS)
Click Allow when prompted for microphone access. Safari works with system audio on macOS, so any audio playing on your Mac will be captured.
Firefox (Desktop)
Allow the microphone permission when prompted. Firefox works with audio from any source playing on your device.
iOS (Safari)
Tap Allow when the permission dialog appears. Works best with music playing from another app (Apple Music, Spotify, etc.) while Color and Sound is open in Safari. Make sure your device isn't on silent mode.
Android (Chrome)
Tap Allow when prompted for microphone access. Works with any audio source playing on your device.
Troubleshooting: No Visuals?
If you don't see any visuals reacting to your music, check the following:
- Permissions: Make sure you allowed microphone/audio access. Check your browser's address bar for a blocked permission icon.
- Volume: Turn up the volume. The visualizer needs enough audio signal to respond.
- Audio is playing: Confirm that music or audio is actually playing from some source on your device.
- Refresh: Try refreshing the page and allowing permissions again.
- Try another browser: If one browser doesn't work, Chrome usually has the best audio support.
How to Change Presets
Color and Sound includes multiple visual presets, each with a unique style. Switch between them:
- Swipe left or right on mobile to cycle through presets
- Press the left/right arrow keys on desktop
- Tap the palette icon to browse available presets
Every preset responds differently to bass, mids, and highs—so try several with different genres of music to find the one that fits your vibe.
How to Go Fullscreen
- Press F on your keyboard to toggle fullscreen
- Tap the expand icon in the app's controls
- Double-tap the screen on mobile devices
Fullscreen mode hides the browser UI and controls, giving you a distraction-free, immersive music visualizer experience. Press Esc or double-tap again to exit.
How to Install as an App (PWA)
Color and Sound is a Progressive Web App. You can install it to your device for a native app experience—no app store needed, no download required.
Chrome (Desktop & Android)
Open the browser menu (three dots) and select Install Color and Sound. On Android, you may also see an "Add to Home Screen" banner.
Safari (iOS / iPadOS)
Tap the Share button (square with arrow), then scroll down and tap Add to Home Screen. The app will appear as an icon on your home screen.
Edge (Desktop)
Open the browser menu (three dots), go to Apps, and click Install Color and Sound.
Once installed, Color and Sound launches in its own window without browser bars, and works offline after first load.

Digital Artists & Creative Coders
Real-time generative visuals in your browser.
Color and Sound is built on WebGL and the Web Audio API. Every frame is a unique, real-time generative visual driven by audio frequency data. No two moments are the same. Use it as inspiration, a starting point, or a finished piece.
Tips & Tricks
- Bass-heavy music produces the most dramatic visual reactions. Try electronic, hip-hop, or lo-fi beats.
- Use headphones or external speakers with good bass response for the best visual output—built-in laptop speakers often lack low-end.
- Try every preset with different genres. A preset that looks flat with acoustic guitar might explode with electronic music.
- Cast to a TV using Chromecast, AirPlay, or an HDMI cable for the biggest, most immersive experience.
- Screen record for content. Use your OS screen recorder (Cmd+Shift+5 on Mac, Win+G on Windows) to capture the visuals.
- Run it in a separate window (not just a tab) and resize it to fit any screen area you want.
- Install as a PWA for the cleanest look—no address bar, no browser chrome, just visuals.
- Bookmark your favorite preset by noting its position in the cycle so you can quickly swipe back to it.
